Queal Vegan Shakes: Taste Test

Following my last Queal review, Jiska from Queal was kind enough to send me a lovely box of the newly available (in North America) vegan shakes! After a few weeks of sitting in excitement while finishing up my current Queal inventory, it arrived!

Upon opening my box, I found:

  • Vegan Banana Steady Shake
  • Vegan Vanilla Steady Shake
  • Vegan Chocolate Hazelnut Happiness
  • Vegan Nuts and Salt bar
  • Awesome Stickers
  • Cute Shaker

IMG_1375.JPG

So I loaded my possessions up with Queal stickers and got to tasting…

Texture

The texture of Queal is quite distinct compared to other liquid meals. There is a certain fibrous grain that adds a special level of satisfaction to your meal. Some people who have issues with anything that isn’t absolutely milky smooth (think Hol Food) may not enjoy this- but I am not phased by this, nor is anyone I’ve had try it!  The product is easy to shake up and does not clump nearly as easily as Soylent powder. Personally, I recommend consuming this very cold, so I shake the powder with the recommended water plus two ice cubes.

Taste

The base flavour behind the vegan products vs the non vegan is very subtle. There is a mild pea flavour that is not present in standard Queal Steady shakes, but this is not overwhelming as it is with other pea protein based products like Jake. Of the three flavours I was provided, the pea flavour was most noticeable in the vanilla shake, most likely due to the mildness of the vanilla flavouring. This makes it taste like pancake batter (and with the Queal texture its even closer) in a very good way. The banana flavour is nice and strong and helps mask the pea flavour for those who are looking to avoid noticing it- though in my experience most vegans are friendly with pea protein.

Cost

It costs $11.50 CAD per day to live entirely off of Queal Vegan Shakes. This pricing is fair compared to competitor brands like Jake and JimmyJoy (after JJ shipping costs).

Impact

Queal.com is full of cool information about the impact your dietary decisions make!

Overall

In summary, Queal is a solid competitor in the meal replacement game, offering astonishing amounts of variety in flavour. The customer service is prompt and the shipping is fast. Compared to other companies I have worked with, Queal shows the fastest response time, one of the highest quality products, and one of the best website dashboards I have ordered on. Though there is a definite texture and this product is not perfect for everyone, I believe many people will enjoy adding Queal to their daily routine!

Strain Report: King Kush

Whilst grabbing my usual, Pineapple Express, today I came across some nice looking King Kush and decided to give it a try! Boasting >< 20% THC, why not?

Genetics

  • Grape
  • OG Kush

Smell

This stuff smells beautiful, with a great Big League Chew artificial grape smell. Not unlike  Granddaddy Purple, this strain presents a dank but deep fruity aroma. Also a nice pot pourri flowery aroma fills the room once this stuff gets grinding!

Density

This is my first time having this stuff, but the buds are dense and firm for the most part (I bought a bit so you can never expect the whole batch to be peng). It makes a nice ‘Crack’ when you break off a piece. Though it seemed to be a poorer trim than other strains from this supplier… Perhaps this is due to a higher number of small leaves on the plant itself. Regardless its tight and I don’t care.

Smoke

This is a dense smoke. Nice and sweet flavour with a gentle spice on the finish. Again, the floral notes present themselves in the finish. Smooth, especially given this strain can pack super high THC levels.

Effect

This strain is all good vibes, but newcomers be wary of her strength. A little sleepy, making this strain a good choice for evening use, but not overwhelmingly so (like GDP). First noticeable effect is a warm, heady, creative buzz with a sense of wellbeing, followed by a slow melt into the sofa. Maybe not a good choice for morning use (unless you have nothing to do). Some people report experiencing couch lock, but I personally did not find this even after consuming vast amounts. I would expect this strain would be a knockout if it were prepared as an edible.

***Terpene information coming to my reviews soon!***

Overall

Really great quality cannabis with wonderful aroma and notable strength. I would recommend this for people who seek the more chill aspects of cannabis, as well as anxiety patients. Really relaxing, happy vibes.

Strain Report: Great White Shark

Great White Shark is everywhere, and it is usually cheap. While at my regular spot, I decided to grab a few grams to write my personal experience with this strain. This hybrid strain boasts benefits from both its indica and sativa lineages, providing powerful pain relief without the indica snoozes.

Genetics

  • Super Skunk
  • Brazilian
  • South Indian

Smell

The aroma is nice and sour on this one. It sounds gross, but there are definite notes of baby vomit in this one as well as skunk, decaying leaves (think autumn) and dried citrus. Very earthy and tangy but also very pleasant, certainly a complex aroma.

Smoke

A very smooth, pleasant smoke. Not too lung cramping so it is an excellent choice for people who’s tolerance requires them to consume larger amounts all at once. A little cheesy and sour in the taste as well, with a lingering after taste of juniper and lime. I can imagine this would taste really good in a vaporizer.

Effect

This strain is super weird, providing a very very strong body numbing sensation. I understand immediately how this can be used for daytime pain. That said, it is still on the sleepier side as hybrids go, so I would recommend taking it slow with this stuff if you are consuming in the daytime. Although the classic sativa creativity is present, there is a lack of motivation to act on it and actually create. Whereas I usually find myself stuck to Logic or Ableton, this strain had me on the couch thinking and drinking tea. Not very productive, but certainly fun.  In my opinion this strain has the wrong qualities from each parent, its has indica that doesn’t help me sleep and  sativa that doesn’t help me create…. Maybe perfect for a rainy day!

Getting Started Growing Cannabis

Overall this stuff is good enough, but is most definitely worth the lower price I pay for it (I wouldn’t pay over $10 CAD/g ever). There is a very generic vibe to the effects, which is probably why its such a classic… Grab some next time you see it (if the price is right) and see for yourself what you think of the classic Great White Shark.

Queal Standard Steady Shakes: Taste Test

I stumbled upon Queal a few weeks ago, browsing the internet for a lent or liquid diet that would ship to Canada. I was super intrigued by their vast selection of flavours, so I quickly ordered one of each flavour available.

The first awesome thing I noticed was the Queal dashboard after you purchase. They go extensively into the impact that your Queal consumption makes on the environment, health, and your bank account!

These were my impact results from purchasing 8 complete days of food:

The site also includes reordering reminders and subscription services that can save a few extra bucks.

Cost

My package arrived about a week later and I ended up with:

  • One x (3 servings)  Caffeinated Cola Kick
  • One x Funky Forest Fruit
  • One x Awesome Apple Pie
  • One x Cool Chocolate
  • One x Super Strawberry
  • One x Banana Mania
  • One x Chocolate Hazelnut Happiness
  • One x Smooth Vanilla
  • One x Nuts and Sea Salt Go Bar was included for FREE 🙂
  • Free Shaker Bottle

Total Cost was $83 USD for Queal and shipping + $15 at customs= $98 or $12.3 USD/DAY

Total Cost was $108 CAD for Queal and shipping + $20 at customs= $128 or $16 CAD/DAY

Texture

I prepared these as per directions by adding 5 (yes, 5) scoops of Queal to 350ml of water.  All of these products have a similar texture so I will dress that as a whole now. The texture is not extremely smooth, but this is not in a bad way at all. There is a definite grit in the drink, but with the delicious flavour it almost adds something satisfying to each meal. About the same thickness as Soylent 2.0, but with the added fibrousness that isn’t for everyone, but I certainly enjoy. Texturally a bit similar to the previous Hol Food chocolate formula, but without any sinking bits like that old formula had, for anyone who had the chance to try that and knows what I mean… This would likely not be the product for you if you seek something ultra smooth like the newer Hol Food or even soylent 2.0, but is certainly for you if you don’t mind texture and seek variety. Now on to the tasting!

Taste

Awesome Apple Pie is a great flavour. This was the first one I tried, and I was truly surprised by the sweetness of this flavour. I mean, its apple pie, its supposed to be sweet so I’m not sure what i was expecting but it was a pleasant surprise compared to other less sweetened shakes. The texture of Queal compliments this flavour because the fibrousness gives the implication of a pie crust to the palate. Really good.

Banana Mania was less sweet than the apple pie but still sweeter than other shake brands. The banana flavour is really nice and this honestly just tastes like a bowl of oats with a banana in it. Super tasty, I might blent this one with the Cool Chocolate soon.

Speaking of chocolate, this flavour is alarmingly similar to old school Hol Food, but a bit sweeter, milkier, and generally just a really delicious cocoa taste.

Cola Kick was fun but really weird. Don’t get me confused here, I LOVE it. Its just so unlike anything I have had before. Maybe closest to a Coke float that melted? I don’t even know what to think about this one but it was limited time and now I can’t get more and I’m super bummed out about it.

Smooth Vanilla is your typical plain vanilla flavour. Not much so say about this flavour, I will mix it with other things to add punch.

Super Strawberry and Funky Forest Fruit taste like liquid versions of two flavours of Nutri-grain Bar, with the forest fruit having blueberry and cranberry notes while the strawberry has, well, strawberry notes. The oat flavour really pops in these two.

Chocolate Hazelnut Happiness was also a fun flavour. The cocoa flavour is really really nice and complimented the hazelnut flavour. My only change would be a slightly less artificial hazelnut flavouring as it tastes a bit more on the fake side. Really sweet and again, the texture complimented this one a lot.

Nutrition

Here’s some label shots so you can get a look at the ingredients and nutrients!

IMG_1252.jpg

…Essentially this stuff is based on Oats and Milk. Sounds great!

IMG_1251.jpg

Shaker Bottle

The Shaker bottle seems to be of great quality. It has a screen rather than a shaker ball. My only complaint is that the top is a screw cap and I 100% guarantee that I am going to lose the top…

The Bar

We also received one free Go Bar.

IMG_1237.jpg

The texture is very crunchy and chewy and satisfying, though I was not big on the taste. They weren’t kidding when they said salt. This is a very salty, nutty bar. If that is your thing, you will love this!

Overall

I have really enjoyed my experience with Queal so far, and I am about to go place another order right now! Really awesome taste, and CRAZY VARIETY, not to mention a wonderful instagram team (shoutout to Jiska). All in all, this is amazing stuff and I think they may have me hooked.

…So how does it rank?

  1. Hol Food (New)
  2. Queal Steady
  3. Soylent 2.0
  4. Hol Food (Old)
  5. Jake Food

You guys need to try this stuff!

Strain Report: Alaskan Thunder Fuck

I finally found Alaskan Thunder Fuck! This is a sativa dominant hybrid that has quite a curious lineage and a super high THC content up to 25% THC, which is probably why it put me out $16 per gram.

Genetics

  • Unknown Sativa
  • Unknown Ruderalis
  • Afghani

Smell

This stuff smells really weird, there is a definite earthiness to it while still being very sweet, which makes it remind me of a dirt flavoured Bertie Botts Every Flavour Bean. Very specific, I know, but that’s what I’m here for.

There is also a noticeable lemon rind after note in the aroma. Really beautiful stuff here.

Density

This is my first time having this stuff, and I did purchase AAAA grade flower, so this may not always be the case, but what a beautifully dense bud I got. It makes an audible ‘Crack’ as you break a piece away and put it into the grinder. Feels like a moon rock, almost. Crazy.

Smoke

Ok so this is a heavy smoke. Be ready for that, first. Expect an ammonia- sour flavour from this strain on the exhale. A touch citrusy with a strong piney mango and forest floor flavour (no, I have not licked a forest floor).

Effect

This strain snuck up on me, which I am not used to. One dose and I just started doing productive things and singing and having a nice day, whereas usually I am constantly needing to smoke to keep up my energy. The lady at the shop warned me that it is supposed to be snacky, though RIGHT NOW I am not experiencing that any more than your typical stuff.

With Alaskan Thunder Fuck you can expect extreme euphoria, strong mood elevation, and an increased appreciation for music. One small dose made me stop writing this review and go write a few new songs for a while… Similar to Pineapple Express in the way where it seems to encourage me to think outside the box. Extremely long lasting for me, I usually get 45 minutes off of a dose of cannabis, but in this case I was dosing every 2.5 hours! Amazing strength!

***Terpene information coming to my reviews soon!***

Overall

I need more of this stuff, what an absolute treat. I would recommend this to you any day, any time (except maybe night time). This is an amazing strain to have a fun, free day. Arguably the best sativa hybrid I have ever had. Must try.

Strain Report: Tangerine Dream

Tangerine Dream is one of those strains that I buy every time I see it in the shop. An awesome sativa dominant hybrid for relieving pain without knocking you out. This is a super orange coloured, high THC plant. Difficult to grow, and usually pretty tricky to find, this strain is a must have for people who seek a daytime mood boost.

Genetics

  • G13
  • Afghani
  • Neville’s A5 Haze

Smell

Sweet marmalade and cotton candy aromas that take me back to memories of five alive juice boxes and orange crush soda. Really awesome freshness to it.

Density

I have seen this strain get pretty loose, but this is purely aesthetic. The plant, without perfect execution on the growers part, will produce buds that look like mids but smoke way better. I have seen a lot of people take a look at it and decide to buy something a bit prettier- big mistake, buddy. This stuff works a charm.

Smoke

This is one of those strains that actually tastes like its name. The smoke is sweet and fruity, easy to inhale, with no bitter aftertastes (I get this with a lot of lemon and citrus strains). Many strains have little to no taste when consumed by bong rather than rolled, though this strain has such a powerful flavour that you really get this bowl hit of oranges, so cool.

Effect

This is the perfect recreational strain. Tang Dream can give you the push out the door that you need, that bit of bliss that starts your day out right. It has such a worry-crushing, mood elevating effect, paired with it’s strong pain relief that it makes you live your whole day without getting stuck on the little things that would usually bog you down. A small amount of this strain can last you a very long time, making it a very worth the money strain.

***Terpene information coming to my reviews soon!***

Overall

I highly recommend you seek out and purchase this strain if you seek daytime pain relief, energy, or a treatment for depression and anxiety, especially depression. If you just want to have a good day, a little bit of Tangerine Dream might be just what you need.

The Importance of Soil PH

Photo: Pinterest

The pH of the soil has a direct impact on the fertility of the soil. If you’re serious about your garden or vegetables and fruits which you are growing in your garden, it is important to know about the pH of the soil. Depending on the pH, your soil can be acidic or alkaline. Each of these has its own pros and cons. Also, the pH level of the soil has a direct impact on the nutrients which are available in the soil. Owing to this very factor, you have to always be aware of the pH levels of the soil.

Before you bring out your pH scale, you have to understand the levels on it. The pH scale can go from 1 to 14. 7 is considered neutral. If the pH level is below 7, it is considered as acidic. On the other hand, if the pH level is above 7, it is considered as alkaline. If you’re looking for the optimumpresence of nutrients in the soil, you have to ensure that the pH level is around 6 to 7. Even thoughthis is the ideal level but anything between 3.5 to 10 will provide you with the conducive environment for growing your plants.

One thing which you have to keep in mind is that a slight variation in pH can result in drastic variation in nutrients. This is because each number on the pH scale is to a factor of 10. That is whyyou have to be very careful when you’re looking to maintain the pH level of your soil.

You will now look at both the soil options in order to help you better understand which one is suitable for your garden.

Acidic soil

Acidic soil is often found in areas which has a significant amount of rainfall. The main problem with acidic soil is that the nutrients will be absorbed by the soil at a much slower pace. In many of the cases, the amountof nutrients which are found are pretty low. Also, when you’re using fertilizers on acidic soil, they will yield a little result because absorption will not take place.

Solution:

When you’re looking to increase the pH level of the soil so that it is not acidic, a good option is to add agricultural limestone. When you’re adding limestone, it will replace calcium as well as magnesium. This will help you in increasing the pH level of the soil.

Alkaline soil

If the pH level of the soil is pretty high because it is alkaline you can easily add organic matter in order to reduce the pH levels. It is much easier to manage the alkaline soil as compared to the acidic soil. You need to test the soil and in order to find out about the sodium contents. Oftentimes, in the alkalinesoil, the sodium content is on the higher side. If it is so, it will hamper the growth of your plants. That is whyit is important to solve the problem of high pH levels when you’re having an alkalinesoil.

Solution:

As we stated above, you can easily add decomposed organic matter. In addition to that, you can use foliarspray or liquid seaweed.

All in all, when you’re planning on starting some new plants, it is important to know about the pH level of the soil. Only once you are able to do that will it become easier for you to choose the right kind of plants for your perfect garden.
