New Hol Food Vanilla: Review

This morning it happened. My vanilla Hol Food arrived!

I had recently been really missing the neutral taste of Soylent¬†when I heard that Hol Food was launching a mild vanilla so this was perfect timing.¬†The packaging is the same as the new chocolate, with those shapes that make me think of the old “Somebody That I Used To Know” Gotye music video. Regardless, everything arrived when they said it would all looks well packed as have all other packages.

Now to taste. I scooped out 2 scoops of my vanilla into my beloved shaker bottle and prepared according to the package directions by adding 350ml of water and combining. The Taste is very mild. Less sweet even than the chocolate, providing a very neutral beverage meal. Just a whisper of vanilla and a hint of bitterness/ metallic flavour. The metallic flavour is not present in the new chocolate but it is not bad at all, just noticeable. This stuff actually smells exactly like a slimmfast vanilla milkshake, if anyone has had those. The texture is smoother than any other Lent, and comparable to the texture of the new chocolate formula but perhaps a touch thinner. Less grainy even than Soylent 2.0. I must emphasize that this is actually the smoothest stuff, with zero noticeable grain whatsoever. Really good stuff though.

With all Hol Food products, I find they benefit from being prepared an hour before consumption and left in the refrigerator to become more homogenous and colder.

Nutritionally, here is what we are working with…

FullSizeRender-1FullSizeRender

My recent taste test of Jake Food has given me a newfound appreciation for this Hol Food.. Not all Lents are this delicious and definitely not all are this smooth.

OVERALL GREAT, but I prefer the new chocolate.

An Introduction To Kefir

Kefir is becoming quite popular in the drinkable ‘yogurt’ market. The problem most people encounter, however, is that they do not know exactly what it is. Who wants to drink this funky mystery water that their friend brewed. Once you are able to find that out, it will become much easier for you to decide whether or not this is the probiotic product for you.

What is Kefir?

Kefir is a type of probiotic beverage. The main ingredients of the beverage are  Kefir grains. These grains consist of bacteria as well as yeast. The term grains, is used symbolically. It does not consist of any actual grains, more these firm little clear or yellow gummy bear dudes just floating around in the fermenting tank. Super cute.

If you purchase these grains online, you can easily make your own kefir daily and save a TON. This stuff is usually pretty pricey.

The benefits of this beverage are plentiful. Below is a list of some benefits you can expect from water kefir to get you started with this funky drink.

Nutrition

It is often made from cows milk, coconut milk or almond milk. Since it can be made from non-dairy milk, lactose intolerant people can also have it. Also, obviously milk contains loads of protein, calcium, vitamin B12, magnesium which ensures that you are able to get quite a few nutrients when you’re drinking it. Additionally, it also consists of amino acids which are beneficial for the body.

Probiotics

Kefir is teaming with a variety probiotics which help you in improving your digestive system. Moreover, probiotics reduce inflammation in the body.

Bone Health:

Due to the presence of vitamin K2 in many of the bases used for kefir, bone health is claimed to be improved in long term consumers. This ensures that most of the people consuming it will not suffer from osteoporosis.

Acne

Kefir has been reported by many popular news outlets to have excellent effects on acne, especially in younger consumers.

Allergies

As it reduces inflammation, it also helps you in avoiding allergies altogether. This ensures that you are able to avoid such health problems to a greater extent.

If you want the benefits of Kefir without a dairy or dairy replacement, consider Water Kefir. It is made with sugar water and can be made into a slightly fizzy drink!

Overall, when you’re considering the benefits of Kefir, you will see a vast amount of upsides vs downsides. Consider consuming this beverage, and gain all of these health benefits. Also, since Kefir is naturally made, you can be sure that you will be able to consume it on a regular basis without any problems at all. You can even make it yourself! (Recipe Coming soon) Moreover, you will not be relying on any harmful ingredients in order to improve your health.

Strain Report: Critical Mass CBD

Photo: Midwest Compassion Club

Okay so we all know CBD is amazing for our health. Smoke it, eat it, whatever, its awesome. Critical Mass CBD brings the pain relief and anxiety relief hard with a much lower mental effect from the lower THC content. This is an Indica dominant hybrid, so expect the light amount of THC buzz to be nice and relaxing while the CBD works its magic on the pain.

Boasting ><10% CBD, this strain is absolutely perfect for chronic pain sufferers and insomniacs alike.

Genetics

  • Critical Mass
  • Undisclosed Strain by CBD Crew

And the mystery behind this strain’s missing parent makes it all the more exciting.

Smell 8/10

The smell of this strain is very rustic. Think butter toffee or a loaf being baked in a country home. Cinnamon and spice notes with just a hint of citrus. Really beautiful smell

Density 9/10

One of the denser strains I have come across. There is a distinct ‘ping’ noise when it hits a hard surface like a scale. These things are rocks.

Smoke 7/10

The smoke on this strain is very smooth, especially when consumed in joint form rather than through a bong. The higher price point makes me want to sit and enjoy it, anyways. Nice pie crust sort of flavour on the finish, and I get a noticeable hint of cinnamon. Smooth asf. One of the easier smokes for sure. I have not had the pleasure of trying Critical Mass CBD in edible form (one day).

Effect 8/10

Due to its 1:1 ratio, this is not a recreational strain. The THC is super low and I barely feel it at all, but this is also due to me smoking profuse amounts daily. Tolerance for days.

Smoke this strain for pain and inflammation, as the CBD will end that shit real quick. It has the pleasant CBD effect where you can sleep, but you don’t need to by any means. Very relaxing with strong body and muscle relaxation. Do not make plans when you are smoking this, and I really only recommend using this in very small amounts when necessary medically, since it usually comes in at around $15+ per gram in Ontario dispensaries. To this day, this is the strain with the most medical potential and least recreational potential that I have ever consumed.

Overall 32/40

I recommend you seek out and purchase this strain if you seek pain relief. Not recommended for recreational use due to its high price point and low THC. This is a medical wonder strain, you could pretty much say I love it.

Carnival Style Cinnamon Donuts: Recipe

These little donut bites are just like the ones you can get here at The Ex in Toronto and other fall fairs. So delicious when you serve them piping hot, still a little greasy with cinnamon sugar getting stuck to your fingers. I made these the other night after getting the munchies after downing a whole bottle of wine. It. Was. The. Best.

Enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Cups Flour
  • 1/2 Cup White Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Milk
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Nutmeg (Optional)
  • 1 Cup of Cinnamon Sugar
  • Oil for frying

Method

  1. Preheat oil to 365f or until it looks hot, don’t worry yourself too much about it.
  2. Mix flour, sugar, salt, and nutmeg in a bowl. Beat in the milk, egg, and vanilla.
  3. Spoon batter in 1 Tablespoon scoops into the hot oil and fry 2-3 minutes per side, depending on how golden you like your bites.
  4. Immediately roll the donuts in the cinnamon sugar and serve warm.

Happy Frying,

OOCH

Strain Report: Granddaddy Purple

GDP¬†is an amazing Indica with intense sedating effects. Huge numbers in both THC and CBD. The colour is so crazy purple to the eye you almost won’t believe it. I have had the chance to consume this strain as flower, edible, and shatter extract, and I keep coming back. As a frequent sufferer of anxiety and depression, this strain can knock me out even from the worst of times. This is so valuable to me as a heavy heavy smoker because most of the time, even the sleepiest of weeds can’t actually put me down because of my tolerance. Granddaddy P can without fail.

Genetics

  • Purple Urkle
  • Big Bud

Smell 8/10

Smells like artificial grape. It has a very sweet, sticky, ‘Big League Chew’ gum smell to it. Not unlike a Grapple, which is just the weirdest fruit. Overall this smells super sweet and of berries and grape.

Density 9/10

Always tight and uniform, I find that with a lot of ‘purple’ strains.

Smoke 7/10

The smoke is a lot. I won’t lie to you, every time I have had this strain I have been taken back by how I have to reduce my portion sizes to accommodate the thick smoke this bud provides. This is likely why it is so popular as a shatter or extract, which reduce the stress on your lungs compared to GDP bud. Be careful with your portion sizes when packing bowls.

Effect 8/10

This strain is strong, sleepy as anything. You will not do anything.

The rise is quick so be prepared, and it goes hard. I usually get pretty snacky with this one, but due to its sedating effects it usually is more of an in bed binge followed by a long nap. An excellent choice for people who suffer from anxiety and need nighttime relief. Very drowsy. Do not smoke this unless you want to sleep, IMO. I don’t recommend if you are seriously depressed, this doesn’t help that at all.

As An Edible 8/10

As an edible this strain is even more potent than when smoked. Do not eat this strain unless you are an experienced user or are very careful with your dosing.

As an edible this strain is great for sleep due to its high content of both THC and CBD. Expect GDP edibles to rise slightly faster than usual edibles or oils.

Overall 40/50

I recommend you seek out and purchase this strain if you need help sleeping. This is a great strain for sleep but also a very one trick pony.

Review: New Hol Food Chocolate Formula/ Rebrand

Here is a comprehensive review of the updated Hol Food Chocolate formula.

….And here is my new shipment!

IMG_1098

Okay, so I have been bugging the¬†Hol Food¬†customer service a lot this week. After placing my first order I got it almost instantly, so obviously I quickly ordered again. Likely due to this formula changeover, this time it took 5 business days to ship HALF of my order, only the new chocolate sans my vanilla. The vanilla, according to their customer service, is still filling and won’t be ready to ship until early next week… But like then why are they selling it now? …bruh.

So now a bit more than a week later, here we stand, new Hol Food in hand. Lets see how it compares to the old stuff.

Canadian_Hol_Food_Container_smaller_w_powder_no_milk_logo

Photo: The old, much more rustic packaging. The new tubs are much more modern and are now able to ship without getting chocolate dust all over the box.

So I moved my cats, opened the new white tub and made my Hol Food. The paper seal was unsealed on the top but it took me a second to fight off the lid so I am not certain that damage wasn’t me, also if not I’m sure I’ll live. The scoop may be slightly smaller than previous formula. This new formula smells a lot like a Soylent¬†product, but I can’t put my finger on what it is.

I make mine in a blender, since the last formula was so lumpy. This one is NOT LUMPY AT ALL.¬†The flavour is very similar to the older Hol Food with its unsweetened cocoa taste, but the texture is NEXT LEVEL. So smooth. The taste is maybe a bit milder, actually, but not much. I do think there’s a reason they are calling this the “Smoothest Lent Ever” in their Reddit Ad. Very creamy, more ‘gooey’ than the first formula and not chalky at all. Last batch was chalky as hell. I don’t even think I need to blend this new formula, and I can probably just shake it in a mason jar. This method did not work for me with the old formula because of the sand like grit at the bottom- glad this is gone now. This new stuff is like freaky smooth.

This formula is MUCH more filling than the last formula. Previously I could chug a whole meal and move on, this one slows me down to sipping about half way. This is likely due to the increased protein content in the new formula, going from 30g-35g of protein per serving.

IMG_1100

Nutritionally this is WAY different than the last Hol Food. Each meal boasting only 400 Calories in stead of the previous 500 calories. And all of the vitamins and minerals are in varying amounts, unlike the old formula which was 25% down the board. I wonder what this means for how many meals I am supposed to eat? If I eat 4 that 1600 calories but way over on Vitamin A, magnese, copper, and vitamin E, but slightly under on everything else.

IMG_1099

I’m probably just going to do four a day though, I could use a little calorie reduction lately.

Heres a comparison:

Product            Taste       Texture        Shipping            Price

New Form. ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†8.5/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†10/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† 5/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ūüôā

Old Form. ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† 8/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†7/10 ¬† ¬† 9/10 (on that order) ¬† ¬† ¬†ūüôā

Soylent Cocoa ¬† 7/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†9/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬†10/10 ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ūüė¶

This page will be updated as I continue to consume this product all week.

All in all, this formula is a serious step up from the last one. So much so that I will continue to put my shipping differences aside and keep ordering because this product is really delicious. I am pumped up to try the vanilla when it finally arrives! If you are not impatient with shipping I highly, highly recommend this product.

Thanks for reading,

OOCH

Recipe: EXTRA HOT Fermented Habanero Lime Hot Sauce

Hot, citrusy, and packed with natural good bacteria. This lacto-fermented hot sauce is inspired by Tabasco, but boasts somewhere around 200’000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units) since it substitutes Habanero peppers, so buckle down guys…

Ingredients

  • 2 Pounds of Red Habanero Peppers, washed, stemmed, crown on, seeds in.
  • 8 Cloves of Garlic
  • 20 Grams of Salt
  • 3 Bay Leaves
  • 1 Cup of White Vinegar
  • 1 Cup of Fresh Lime Juice
  • Zest of 1 Lime
  • (optional) 1tsp Xanthan Gum

Method

  1. Place the peppers, garlic, and salt in a food processor and blend until completely smooth. Leave the green crowns on the peppers when doing this as they add a floral taste. Leave in the seeds, this is hot sauce game for real.
  2. Transfer the mixture to an appropriately sized jar and add the bay leaves. We used a 1gal Jar and there was more than half space. Cover with the lid, don’t worry it won’t explode.
  3. Set in a warm, dark place for a minimum of 3 weeks, shake the contents and burp the jar daily for the first week and a half while the sauce is getting really hyped up with good bacteria.
  4. After your sauce is done fermenting you will notice a slight but mild funky smell on the sauce, this is the fermentation done right. If it smells actively BAD it probably is, but that kind of thing happens so rarely don’t even worry.
  5. Add in the vinegar, lime juice, zest, and mix well.
  6. (optional) Add the xanthan gum and blend the sauce again to avoid any separation, though we don’t bother with this, is it that hard to shake a bottle before pouring?
  7. Keep your sauce refrigerated and enjoy within 6 months for best results. But what’s really gonna happen?

Enjoy making this awesome sauce but USE WITH CAUTION, this stuff is crazy.
